Lagging Behind

Way behind. It's been like a month since my last post?? *shakes head* Way too long for me to be away from my writing...I do have quite a few ideas for posts floating around in my head, but it's been crazy finding the time to write them! SO...instead of working on those posts, I'm going to post on something random...

Staying up late...is bad for you. And why? Because it's not normal, is why. The majority of the population goes to bed at some insane hour of 8-9 o'clock at night, and then gets up at 6 in the morning?!? Well, just because most people do it, doesn't mean I should and it doesn't make it right either. Ok, on to the next argument...the Bible has so much to say on getting up early and how good it is for you. Let's take a look at some of them, shall we?

Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early...

Proverbs 1:28
Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

Isaiah 5:11
Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning...

Isaiah 37:36
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

Zephaniah 3:7
I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

As you can see, waking up early can be detrimental to our health...and can also corrupt us. No wonder this nation is in shambles; people just aren't seeing the light (no pun intended). There are such things as nocturnal animals, why not people? And who says that getting up at 2 in the afternoon is late? For those of you who may not know, that is early in the night owl's dictionary. You just have different definitions for your "early." So for all those people out there who are night owls, kudos, for going against the flow and being unique.

P.S. Yes, it really is 3:37am...

WOW . . . ;) Did Justin help you write this post after he tried to prove biblically that people should go to NEXT? ;)

Haha! Unfortunately, I didn't have Justin's expertise with this one...but if I ever need some help, now I know who to go to. ;)

And I guess he wasn't able to convince you very well, eh?? Wow...haha. :P

Be careful of pulling Scripture out of context.

Psalm 127:2- "In vain your rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat- for he grants sleep to those he loves". God is not against human effort. But working so much as to deprive ourselves of sleep, or to the neglect of family for a "cover-up" for our inablility to trust God to provide for our needs - is vain. It's not the "getting up early" that is in vain.

Proverbs 1:28 -This verse, including all of Proverbs chapter one, is talking about the fools and scoffers who, when disaster overtakes them, frantically try to seek the wisdom to get out of trouble. It will be only too late for them. It is not because they got up early that they could not seek or find God, but because they only did so when disaster overtook them.

Isaiah 5:11 - This verse is talking about those who rise early to spend many hours drinking and partying, and "tarrying late into the evening as wine inflames them" Isaiah predicted that eventually many would die of hunger and thirst. Our pleasures - if they do not have God's blessing may destroy us.

Isaiah 37:36 - The "dead corpses" in this verse were the 185,000 dead bodies of the Assyrians, who, God destroyed in his promise to save Hezekiah and as a powerful demonstration of His power over his enemies. NOT because they rose up early.

Zephaniah 3:7 - The ones who "rose early, and corrupted all their doings" were the Israelites, when they allowed sin to harden their hearts so much...that they actually became "eager" to sin. These consequences did not come upon them because they rose early.

I'm sorry to say but there really is no where in the Bible where it says that we cannot rise early or that it can be detrimental to our health or we could be corrupted. Yes, we need to get enough sleep each night, but I assure you, the worst thing that can happen to us due to waking up early would just be possible tiredness. :)

God wants us to make wise use of our time, and not just sleep our days away.

Proverbs 20:13 - Do not love sleep, or else you will come to poverty, open your eyes and be satisfied with bread.

Proverbs 6:9-11 - How long, sluggard, will you lie there? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and your poverty comes upon you like a robber and your want, as an armed man.

These verses are warning us against the temptation of laziness, of sleeping in instead of working. If laziness turns us from our responsibilities, poverty may soon bar us from the rest we should enjoy.

In fact, Jesus got up early: Mark 1:35, Luke 21:38, John 8:2

Even the Proverbs 31 woman "gets up while it is still dark" (verse 15) and "her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her". (verse 28)

A suggestion when doing a study on a topic like this, is to have a Bible concordance on hand so you can better understand the meaning of the verses.

Wow, I think that that is the longest comment I have ever had...

Thank you for your very well said and thought out comment, Kira. :)

You have pointed out the first point of this post, and good job for being diligent and seeking out the Scriptures for yourself. Bravo!:D

Lol! It was so funny to see your blog show up on my sidebar as "Pressing Toward the Mark" with "Lagging Behind" directly beneath it. I knew it had to be a good post. Oh, and if you ever need an excuse to put off studying, check out Ecclesiastes 12:12 and 1:18 :D

Haha, I didn't think about the title "coinciding" with the blog name. ;)

And thanks for the verses! Hehe, funny thing is, I had both of them highlighted in my Bible...I'll have to remember to use 'em next time when I don't want to study. :D

Hmmmm, not bad.. you were really bored weren't you Tiff? :P
I can see that some of your friends didn't see the humor.. haha! I think your next blog post should be about the importance of reading too much into silly posts!
God bless ya midget

lol, don't be mean now... :P

You imp, I wasn't bored...I just needed to come up with a quick post to keep up with the high demand of my blog. ;)

Thanks for the comment! :)
